Summary: With 399.13 million dwt of orders on the books and berths full into 2030, shipyards are writing 2027 supply contracts now. Four clauses decide whether abrasive supply holds: lead time, acceptance criteria, refill logistics and the annual framework.
China's yards finished the first nine months of 2026 with a backlog of 399.13 million dwt, 64.8% higher than a year earlier, and new orders at 175.29 million dwt — 81.8% of the world total, according to ministry data released on 25 October. Tanker demand is the sharp end: 144 VLCC orders in nine months, 85.5% of global tonnage in that class, and tanker newbuildings at a record 7.1389 million dwt for the period.
That backlog converts into a scheduling problem. A yard that booked a hull for 2027 delivery must have its consumables locked before the block shop ramps up. Blasting media is a high-volume, continuously consumed item that also weighs a lot per cubic metre of storage — which makes it exactly the kind of material that fails quietly when a contract is vague.
"Delivery within seven days" reads clearly and fails in peak season, when every supplier's own stock is being drawn down at once. Seven days becomes fifteen.
Write the clause in two parts instead: standard replenishment in X days, emergency response in Y hours. For shipyard customers we commit to 72-hour delivery on standard grades, with a first truck dispatched within 24 hours in an emergency to keep the line running, sourced from 28 stocking bases nationwide. That sentence in a contract is worth more than a general promise to "ensure supply".
The word "qualified" is where abrasive contracts go soft. A yard needs Sa2.5 and 45–75 µm roughness; a supplier certifies compliance with a national standard. There is a large gap in between.
Attach an acceptance sheet to the contract with four lines: hardness and its variation band, particle size distribution, non-spherical particle content, and density. We work to enterprise standard Q/HX 001-2026 — non-spherical particles at 5% or below, sulphur and phosphorus at 0.03% or below, density at 7.4 g/cm³ or above, cyclic life of 2,200 cycles or more, hardness variation within ±2 HRC — with a GB/T 18838.4 report per batch. Inspecting against a written table ends the argument before it starts.
Abrasive is not like paint. It is consumed continuously and it is heavy. A tonne of steel shot is more than twenty bags, and a shop refilling a dozen times a day burns labour that quietly eats the savings from a cheaper unit price.
Two practical terms: bulk bags or big packs to cut the number of openings, and a fixed weekly refill day so scattered top-ups become two consolidated deliveries. One customer moved from daily ad-hoc refills to two scheduled deliveries a week and recovered enough shop-floor hours to add half a shift.
Annual abrasive consumption is calculable: block area × top-up rate × loss factor. With recycled shot running 5–10 kg per square metre in dock blasting, a yard that knows its annual square metres has a defensible number.
Give that number to a supplier and ask for framework pricing and priority allocation. For a yard whose slots run past 2030, locking a one-year framework removes abrasive from the list of variables in the cost model — which is worth more than the last few percent of unit price.
A: On 27 October 2026, 20 mm commercial plate averaged 3,452 RMB/t nationwide, down 18 RMB on the day, while 20 mm shipbuilding plate rose 1 RMB to 3,827 RMB/t. Shipbuilding plate is holding because yard demand is firm, even as the broader plate market softens.
A: Not directly. Shot is made from scrap and melted with electricity; heavy scrap averaged 2,015 RMB/t across 45 cities on 23 October, near a yearly low. Media pricing tracks scrap and power, not shipbuilding plate.
A: Hardness with variation band, size distribution, non-spherical content, density, and cyclic life. Ask for a certified report with each batch and spot-check roughness on a reference plate once a month to confirm the media still performs as specified.
A: Within 72 hours for standard grades from regional stock, and within 24 hours for an emergency first truck. Grades covered include S230–S780 alloy shot, stainless cut wire shot 0.3–2.5 mm, high-carbon and high-manganese cut wire shot, and angular grit G12–G120.
