Restarting Your Blasting Line After the Holiday: A Checklist for Abrasive Supply

The National Day break is over. Before the line goes back to full output, it is worth spending twenty minutes on the abrasive side — because the first week back is when supply problems hurt most.

1. Check the plates, not just the schedule

Steel left outdoors for seven days develops a heavier rust layer than the stock you were running before the break. Heavier rust and hard mill scale need more impact energy, so the shot-to-grit ratio has to change with it.

If the old recipe is reused unchanged, the usual result is a surface with patches of scale left on it — and a re-blast that eats the days you just saved.

2. Size the order against last quarter, not last month

Production in the first week after a long holiday tends to run above the normal monthly average. A practical starting point is to take the same period from the previous quarter and add an allowance of 15–20%, then top up once real consumption is visible.

3. Get the ratio calculated, not guessed

Ratio selection depends on three things:

| Input | Why it matters |

|---|---|

| Workpiece material | Determines hardness and impact energy needed |

| Machine type | Sets the throw velocity and coverage |

| Required roughness | Decides where the cut shifts from impact to cutting |

Our intelligent graded abrasive system, developed in 2022 by an in-house PhD research team, takes those three inputs and returns a recommended steel shot / steel grit ratio. Because the particle size distribution is held consistent per batch, machine parameters do not need re-tuning with every delivery.

Customers using the system report abrasive consumption reductions of up to around 30% versus manual mixing, with results meeting Sa2.5 requirements for anti-corrosion coating. The system was selected into the Top 50 AI Application Scenarios in Hubei Province in August 2026.

4. Confirm what your supplier will actually commit to

Three questions worth asking:

  • Will you calculate the ratio for my specific workpiece and machine, or only quote a price per tonne?
  • Can you provide batch certificates for chemistry, hardness, and particle size distribution?
  • What is the lead time if I run short mid-week?

On the last point: abrasives are a consumable. Running out does not slow the line down, it stops it. A local manufacturer with stock nearby is worth more than a slightly lower tonne price.

5. Keep a sample from the outgoing batch

If surface quality changes after switching stock, having a retained sample from the previous batch makes the comparison quick rather than a guessing game.
