1. Low density causes breakage

Steel shot density directly determines its service life. Quality cast steel shot should have a density above 7.4 g/cm³. Low density shot has many internal pores and breaks into powder after just a few impacts.

How to check? Drop a few shots on the ground. If it shatters into powder, it is low quality. If it only has small cracks, it is good quality. For accurate figures, measure it by the water displacement method or ask for the mill test report.

2. Too high hardness is not always better

Many people think harder is better. Actually, shot with too high hardness is brittle. It cleans fast but breaks quickly, and leaves the workpiece surface too rough, causing deformation.

The ideal hardness range is HRC 40-50. In this range, the shot has both enough impact force and sufficient toughness, resulting in a longer service life.

3. Sulfur content affects toughness

Cheap steel shot often exceeds sulfur limits to cut costs. High sulfur makes the shot brittle. Quality shot should have sulfur content below 0.05%.

Recycled shot on site matters too. A simple screening step every shift keeps the size distribution stable and prevents powder build-up in the machine.
